Last night we went to see David Tennant and Catherine Tate in Much Ado About Nothing. It’s encouraging to see the West End putting on something other than yet another musical. Not that I don’t like musicals, I do, but I love plays. Do you need top names to draw the crowds? Maybe. But the cast also included several actors making either their professional stage or west end debuts. David Tennant and Catherine Tate sizzled as the reluctant lovers, and the entrapment scene with paint and flying was pure farce. Ann Widdecombe eat your heart out.
The director Josie Rourke has set the action in the 1980s, all white naval uniforms à la ‘Officer and a Gentleman’ and a Diana Spencer wedding dress for doomed Hero.
I have seen a lot of Shakespeare over the years but this one is up there near the top of my list of memorable ones for it flare and energy.
