I call this brooch my domino brooch, I do realise it’s not a true domino. It is made of Lucite with diamante. The brooch is probably American but there are no marks. The pin has been secured by carefully drilling into the Lucite, this takes skill and nowadays manufacturers will just glue fixings and pins onto the back of brooches. A good tip, turn over a piece of jewellery, the back will tell you almost as much as the front.
Dominos are believed to have originated in China in the 12th century, appearing in Italy in the early 18th century and then spreading through the rest of Europe to become a popular pub and parlour game.
My husband’s grandfather who was blinded in the First World War had a special set of dominos with raised spots made of brass pins, they were heavy and tactile. We used to go and stay with my husband’s aunt in Canterbury and would play using this special set of dominos.
